Finding joy through writing and reading
As a child, I loved to dream away the days in an old cherry tree on my family’s pony farm. In my imagination, the tree became a beautiful Arabian stallion, a medieval castle and even a pirate ship. I got in trouble for making my bratty little sisters walk the plank, but hey, they never broke any bones. On rainy days, I headed for my fort in the hayloft. While the rain thudded on the cedar shingled roof, I read books, eventually trading Nancy Drew for White Fang, and all of Jack London's books.
Today, I live on the family ranch in the Cascade foothills of Washington state. I still read a lot. I'm always looking for another good book. I really enjoyed the Hunger Games series and re-read Harry Potter all the time. I usually write at night after a long day on the ranch. I love summer breaks but I’m just as busy, since that’s when I teach horse day-camp. I retired from teaching school and that will give me more time for my books. I can't wait to write during the day instead of doing what I call my "vampire" routine and writing after dark! My articles have appeared in Equus, Country Extra, Horse & Rider, Western Horseman, and Canadian Horse. My Stewart Falls Cheerleader series is being re-released by Fire and Ice YA from Melange Publishing. Throw Away Teen, the first book featured a teen who grew up in foster care and I'm loving the new covers. B.J., the heroine continues to show up in the other stories and I'm now plotting book 7, The Price of Loyalty, and I can't wait to see what B.J. and the rest of the cheer squad do. Meanwhile, Fire & Ice YA publishes my Shamrock Stable series starting with No Horse Wanted. This story of a girl who rescues a starving horse won awards. Book 4 - No Horse Left Behind provided plenty of ideas and a heroine for Book 5 - Not Just A Horse released in November 2019. Book 6 - No Horsing Around is out now and Holiday Hoofbeats, a new Christmas novella will be out in October-November. I am a member of several writing groups, including the Evergreen Writers of America, the Writer's Co-Op of the Pacific Northwest, the Stillaguamish Writers Group, and Pacific NW Writers.
